Ava Black

Ava Lee Walker Black left this earth for her heavenly home on March 7, 2013. Funeral services will be 3:30PM, Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. James Walker and Rev. Michael Vestal officiating. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4-6 p.m., Saturday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Ava was born Sept 16, 1930 to Howard J and Ada Rainer Walker in Freestone County, Texas. She was the only girl of four brothers and was raised at "Booger Corner" near Groesbeck. Upon high school graduation, she met the love of her life Weldon Dee Black at a singing school. At the age of 19 they were married on December 21, 1949. To this family was born three children, Lonnie, Cynthia, and Julie. Although quiet and reserved, she was extremely independent. Once she set her mind to something there was nothing that she could not accomplish. She dedicated her life to her family, rarely thinking of herself. To her children she was known as Mama. To many others she was Mamaw, and known to others as Ava Lee, Sis, and Punk. Not a person to sit idle, she was always busy and had a wide variety of interest and talents. She was an excellent seamstress making everything from wedding dresses to baby blankets. Thinking of others first, she was a caregiver to both old and young. A great cook, everyone loved to eat at her house. No one went hungry, whether it were family or animals. She had a love for working in her yard. Being a perfectionist, she did the work herself. She was the family historian and enjoyed collecting everything from antiques to things of nature. She leaves behind her family of three children: Lonnie Dee Black and wife Tamela of Cold Springs, Cynthia Black O'Pry and husband Ricky of Mexia, and Julie Black Neal of Mexia. Grandchildren: Gregory Don O'Pry and wife Rachel, Tara Cannon and husband Travis, Craig Black and wife Ashton, Allison Neal, and Thomas Black. Great Grandchildren: Meagan, Jackson, Makenzie, Rebekah, Chance, and Kaydence; and brothers: Heston Walker of Chandler, Charles Walker of Houston, James Walker of Tyler and Dennis Walker of Groesbeck. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Weldon Dee Black, and her parents Howard and Ada Walker. Pallbearers will be Gregory O'Pry, Craig Black, Travis Cannon, Thomas Black, Heath Wells and Keith Black. The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to a wonderful and caring person, Freda Brown, for providing such loving care for their Mother.
