Carl Edward Smith, 70, of Mexia passed away May 19, 2009 in Groesbeck. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009 in Blair-Stubbs Chapel. Rev. Mark Griffin will officiate with interment to follow in the Lost Prairie Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 Wednesday at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Carl was born to Otis Edward and Edna Estelle Matthews Smith on March 17, 1939 in Groesbeck, Texas. He retired from Brown & Root after 25 years. Then he went to work at the Mexia State School where he retired after 18 years. Carl enjoyed working and being around people. He could also be found helping his son, Ricky, at his service station. Carl loved spending time with his family. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening. Carl's warmth and friendliness will not be forgotten by those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Rachel Estelle Smith; and sister, Thelma Hinchliffe. Carl is survived by his wife, Linda Ferguson Smith of Mexia; son, Ricky Sanders and wife, Sharon of Mexia; daughters, Tamra Scott of Euless, Angela Shelby and husband, Larry of Fairfield and Theresa Cumbie; grandchildren, Rick Sanders, II and wife, Raquel, Dustin Bonner and wife, Jenna, Spencer Scott, Chad Scott, Leanne Bonner and Reid Sanders; great-grandchild, Seth Bonner; sister, Patsy Smith LaRue and husband, Ron of Anna, Tx.; and brother Otis Allen Smith and wife, Lisa of Groesbeck. Pallbearers will be Rick Sanders, II, Dustin Bonner, Spencer Scott, Chad Scott, Reid Sanders and David Bates. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron LaRue, Bill Carpenter and Frank Cordova.
