C.R. Sutton of Wortham, Texas, passed away at the age of 84 at Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest in Waco, Texas, on September 15, 2024. He was born on September 14,1940, to Russell and Minnie Lee Sutton in Gilmer, Texas. C.R. met and married his wife, Nancy, in May 1960. He and Nancy resided in Garland, Texas, for 13 years where he began his lifelong business of Sutton Paint Contracting. They began a family with son Clint, followed by two daughters, Lori and Tracy.
Although C.R.’s painting business was thriving, his heart was always on the farm. In 1964, C.R. purchased land in Kirvin, Texas, and began living the best of both worlds. He had cattle and horses. In 1975, C.R. and his family purchased a home in Wortham, Texas, eight miles from his farm in Kirvin. It was not unusual to see C.R. painting houses during the day and tending to his farm in the evening. C.R’s son, Clint, was no stranger to working with his dad on weekends and in the summer, in both businesses, which led to the expansion of Sutton & Sutton Painting and Sutton & Sutton Cattle Company. In 2021, C.R. retired from the painting business, but not from farming.
C.R. was a hardworking and well-respected member of his community. The life lessons he taught his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will live on in their memory. He joined the Lone Star Cowboy Church shortly after his wife passed away in 2021. He soon made many friends, including a close relationship with his pastor Shane Winters and wife Rhonda, not only in church but as a friendship.
C.R. was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, of 62 years, his parents Russell and Minnie Lee Sutton, sister Helen Bruner and brother-in-law Ralph, sister Rita Fraizer and brother-in-law Tommy, sister Peggy Simonek, and brother-in-law Gerald Nichols.
He is survived by a sister Linda Stout and brother-in-law Larry of Winnsboro, Texas, a sister Nancy Nichols of Tillamook, Oregon, and a brother-in-law, Freddie Simonek of Mineola, Texas. Children: Clint and wife Teresa Sutton of Kirvin, Texas, Lori Jones and husband Keith of Wortham, Texas, and Tracy Calame of Wortham, Texas. Grandchildren: Courtney Burgess and husband Craig of Fairfield, Texas; Sutton Jones and wife Jenna of Wortham, Texas; Colt Sutton and wife Lori of Fairfield, Texas; Jake Jones and wife Kailea of Wortham, Texas; Whitney Guy and husband Ed of Lufkin, Texas; Peyton Calame and wife Kayla of Fairfield, Texas; Alyvia Allison and husband Logan of Teague, Texas; and Slade Calame and wife Lexi of Fairfield, Texas. Burial will follow the service at Woodland Cemetery in Kirvin, Texas. Pastor Shane Winters will conduct the service.
