He married his college sweetheart, Gloria Ann Van Winkle, after completing their education at Friends University in 1957. They were married at the Friendswood Friends Church in Friendswood, Texas.
Daryl learned to fly while stationed in the U.S. Army at West Point, New York. After his military service, they returned to Friendswood where Daryl flew commercially. In 1966, they made the decision to return to the family homestead in the Texas Panhandle. In 1968, he also began his 33-year banking career while concurrently farming and continuing his love for flying both for business and personal purposes. He continued his education by completing the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado. Daryl was active in numerous civic and community activities, and in the Booker Friends Church. He also served on the board of trustees for Friends University and the Houston Graduate School of Theology. He greatly enjoyed working alongside his siblings and their spouses for many of those years while supporting the mission of CQH. Daryl and Gloria made Lipscomb County their home for over 43 years before relocating to the Texas Hill Country.
