David Wright Montgomery, 65, passed away February 4, 2016 at his home in Mexia. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill Wright, Jr. and Pastor Glenn McGuire officiating. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 1:00-2:00 p.m., Saturday, at the First Presbyterian Church. David was born January 4, 1951 in Teague, Texas to Kenneth Wright and Nancy Sue Norton Montgomery. He grew up in Teague and was a member of the Teague High School Class of 1969. He worked as a driller in the oil field for many years, in addition to several years for Lone Star Gas and the Mexia State Supported Living Center. On March 12, 1971, David married the love of his life, Janis Ingram. Although they made their home in Mexia, David's love for his hometown and the Teague Lions remained dear to his heart. Every year, he attended as many of their football games as possible and 2015 was no exception. Taking treatments and not feeling well, he and his grandson rode the bus to all of their playoff games hoping to see them win state. David loved the Lord and his family and friends. His grandchildren had a special place in his heart as did all kids. Paw Paw always found time to play ball, take them fishing, camping or just spend quality time talking with them. He was also fondly known to some as "Poppy Dave". He enjoyed painting, working on things around the house or helping others, anything to keep busy. He also enjoyed watching football, the Texas Longhorns and Cowboys, old Western shows and doing crossword puzzles. David will be remembered as a quiet, soft spoken, easy going man and (the family joke) a slow driver. He was preceded in death by his parents. David is survived by his wife, Jan Montgomery; sons, Michael D. Montgomery and wife, Stephanie of Kilgore and Stephen R. Montgomery of Mexia; grandchildren, Dayton, Mason, McKenna and Michael D. Montgomery, Jr.; sister, Frances Myers of Dallas; special aunt, Beth Norton; other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives; and his sidekick (dog), Ben. Pallbearers will be Darrell Spurlock, Jason Morton, Bo Ingram, Josh Ingram, Leland Wright and Troy Darby. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Spurlock, Fred Samford, Bill Wright, Jr, Johnny Ingram and Jimbo Ingram. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Providence Hospice for their care and support and the many others in the community for their prayers and support during David's illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Hospice, First Presbyterian Church, American Cancer Society or charity of choice.
