Delmer Austin

Delmer (Del) Lloyd Austin went quietly to his heavenly home January 10, 2018. Del was born in Oakmulgee, OK on August 17, 1932. Del grew up on a farm in rural Oklahoma. Having turned 10 just as WWII began Del was expected to tend the farm as older brothers and brothers-in-law went to serve. Perhaps this is what set him on the lifelong path of service to his family. Later inspired by friends and family Del joined the USAF just weeks before the Korean conflict at the age of 17. He made the Air Force his career retiring after serving thru the Vietnam War. During this time he traveled the world being stationed in Thailand, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia. One of his most treasured memories was a visit to the Holy Land. Del married his first wife Betty and adopted her sons Michael and Dennis and together they continued their family having two daughters Donna and Nancy and a son Chris. After retiring from the Air Force to Big Spring, Tx, Del was a successful real estate broker, night club owner and avid golfer. He was married a second time to Karen and extended his family once again by adopting her daughter April. Del ended his work career with his first love of teaching Aircraft maintenance in San Antonio. After retiring Del had the privilege of raising two of his grandsons. He considered these years the crown jewel of his full and well lived life. Del was preceded in death by both his parent Marion Austin and Nancy (Hicks) Austin, his elder brother George and his sisters Alma, Lori and Beulah and two sons, Michael and Dennis. Del is survived by his loving sister-in- law Rita Austin of El Dorado KS, his son Chris of Bonham, His daughters Donna (Gary) Jones of Austin , Nancy (David) White of Bonham and April (Scott) Whitescarver of Gonzales and five grandsons Brandon and Cody Austin and Austin, Eli and Jamison Whitescarver. Del will be sorely missed by those whose lives he touched. With his playful nature and generous spirit he put others before himself and devoted himself to the care of his family. A graveside service will be held at Forest Glade Cemetery near Mexia, TX on Saturday the 27th of January at 1pm with Pastor Diana Whitley officiating. Flowers may be sent to Blair Stubbs Funeral Home in Mexia TX 76667 or in Lieu of flowers please make a donation to the benefit of Veterans.
