Donald Ray Slaughter, 68, of Houston passed away at his home September 13, 2009. Funeral services will be 1 PM Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Thornton, Texas. Interment will follow in the Thornton Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 PM Tuesday at Blair-Stubbs in Thornton. Donald was born on December 29, 1940 in Kosse, Texas to Clifford H. and Willie Mae Hardin Slaughter. He attended school in Kosse and Thornton. After graduation, Donald received a degree in mechanics from Durham Business School. On July 30, 1960, he married Mary Carter Kennedy in Thornton, Texas. He was a mechanic for Jim Archer Chrysler for 15 years. Donald loved spending time with his family. His hobbies were gardening, building and tinkering with things, feeding birds and he loved to barbecue. He was happy as long as he was outside. Donald was a collector of items that had John Deer Tractors on them. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Rex Slaughter. Donald is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Slaughter of Houston; one son, David Alan Slaughter and wife, Kathy of Livingston; two daughters, DeAndrea Lynnette Grayson and husband, Kenneth of Porter and DeShanna Annette Kirkland and husband, Dennis of Spring; eight grandchildren, David Alan Slaughter, II, Stephanie Nichole Slaughter, Steven Thomas Slaughter, Robert Ray Slaughter, Brian Anthony Slaughter, Brittany Nicole Kirkland, Dennis Richard Kirkland, Thomas Aaron Kirkland; and two sisters, Juanita Ross of Sealy and Bonnie Wynn of Bremond. Pallbearers will be grandsons, David, Robert, Dennis, Thomas, Chris and Brian. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to VITAS Hospice, 4848 Loop Central Dr., Ste. 650, Houston, Tx. 77081.
