Edna LaVerne Day

Edna LaVerne Day, 99, of Shiloh passed away November 28th, 2024. Funeral Services will be Saturday November 30th, 2024 at 2:30 pm in the Blair Stubbs Chapel with Ray Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the Prairie Grove Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be before the funeral service beginning at 1:30 pm.

LaVerne Day was born on August 20, 1925, in Shiloh, Texas, to Joseph Spurgeon and Tressie Estelle (Whisenhunt) Fortson. She attended school in Shiloh and later married Charles Elton Day. Together, they lived in various places during and after World War II before settling in Houston. After some years, they made the heartfelt decision to return to their farm in Shiloh, to raise their family.

LaVerne’s love for children inspired her to open and operate Sunnybrook Farm Daycare in Mexia, where she nurtured and cared for countless little ones. She was a member the First Baptist Church in Mexia. LaVerne was also a founder and served as the secretary of the Prairie Grove Cemetery Association for many years, dedicating herself to preserving the history and sanctity of this beloved community. LaVerne found great joy in the simple pleasures of farm life, researching into her family’s genealogy, and cherishing time with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought light and laughter to her days.

She is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Tressie Fortson, husband Charles Elton Day; brothers Ollie, Joe, Al, Larry and baby brother Harvey Eugene.

LaVerne is survived by Daughter Gina Crossley and husband Glen, Son Galen Day and wife Maurine; Granddaughters Alysha Richardson and husband Chris, Kala Janek and husband Ryan, Grandsons Jason Donaho, and wife Brianna, and Jeromy Donaho and wife Samantha; Sister in Law Yvonne Fortson; 11 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Zoleta Busby and her dedicated team of caregivers for their compassionate and attentive care of LaVerne during her final years. Your kindness and commitment brought comfort and peace to her life and our family. We also offer our deepest thanks to the Accent Care Hospice team of skilled nurses, Donna Nobles and Charlene Henderson, whose support and care in LaVerne's final months were a source of solace and dignity. A special thanks to Basie Vazquez for her many years of unwavering love, devotion, and exceptional care for LaVerne. Your selfless dedication will always be remembered with profound appreciation and love.

Memorials may be made in LaVerne’s memory to the Prairie Grove Cemetery Endowment Association P.O. Box 449, Mexia, Texas 76667.
