Fred Joseph Blackmon, 84, passed away January 5, 2015 in Mexia. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Bro. Earl Sterling officiating. Interment will follow in the Tehuacana Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Fred was born March 5, 1930 in Malakoff, Texas to Thomas Jefferson and Naomi Ray Blackmon. He worked for Mexia Textile, after they closed, as a mechanic and Mexia ISD school cross guard. Fred proudly served his country in the National Guard Army. On April 24, 1953, Fred married the love and light of his life, Nelda Lou Sterling. They were blessed with six children, Ricky, Georgenia, Debra, Scarlet, Charlotte and Joey. Fred always had a smile and hello for everyone he met; he truly had a passion for life and lived it to the fullest. He looked forward to family gatherings, his love for his family was very evident. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing dominoes and cards, pitching washers and horseshoes, music and dancing. He also loved football, baseball and had a great time coaching softball, especially the team on which his wife and daughters all played. Fred was a member of the South McKinney Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 60 years, Nelda Blackmon; brothers, W. O. Blackmon and Darrell Blackmon; and sister, Maxine Sterling. Fred is survived by his children, Ricky Dale Blackmon, Georgenia Lynn "Genia" Duke, Debra Starr Rogers, Scarlet Ann Floyd, Charlotte Darlene Cook and Joey Lonel Blackmon; grandchildren, Ricky Blackmon, Jr., Nikia Duke Benford, Jaree Loper, Tia Leger, Misty Morrow, William Rogers, Jimmy Rogers, Dale Rogers, David Rogers, Nathan Rogers, Sheena Shaw, Bobby Carroll, Kimberly Noey, Joey Blackmon, Jr. Jasmine Blackmon and Harley Cook; brother, Thomas J. Blackmon, Jr.; sister, Helen Scarpa; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Ricky Blackmon, Jr., William Rogers, David Rogers, Nathan Rogers, Bobby Carroll and Clayton Loper. Donnie Morrow will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
