On Thursday, July 20, 2023, Howard Leslie Srader went into eternal rest in the arms of God. He was 74. Howard was born on December 4, 1948, in Hico, Texas to Coston and Dorothy Srader. He was raised on the Bosque River where he was able to do it all.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, sister Liddy Dowell and brother in-law Jo Dowell. He is survived by his wife, Lela Srader, his son and daughter-in law, Charles “Bear” and Julie Srader; his daughter and son-in law Laura and Daimon Jones. He has five grandchildren, one of which he shares a birthday. He has five great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, and many other friends and family.
Howard’s passion for patriotism led him to enlist in the United States Army in 1968 in Gatesville, Texas. His duties began in Fort Polk, Louisiana and then on to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was in the 1st Service Battery, 1st Battalion, 77th Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division. He also served time in Germany, which led to being re-enlisted for duties in Vietnam. His tour of duty in Vietnam lasted 15 months.
He received many accommodations while serving his country. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, three Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, Expert Rifle M-16, and Sharpshooter Rifle M-14.
Before leaving for Vietnam, Howard and Lela were baptized and married on March 10, 1969. After returning from the war, Howard began his profession in construction. He worked for 18 years at Comanche Peak. He helped build the Nuclear Power Plant in Glen Rose, Texas. He continued his work in construction until 2014, when he retired.
Howard enjoyed fishing, collecting arrowhead artifacts and coins, being outside, spending time with his family, cutting up and reading. He loved God, and he was a man of great faith. He was so proud of his family and all their accomplishments. Funeral services will be July 23, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home in Mexia, Texas. There will be visitation from 1 p.m. -2 p.m. prior to the funeral service with Brother David Snow officiating.
