James Allen Martin, 96, and wife, Joycelin Mae Martin, 89, formerly of Bryan, passed away December 17, 2024 in DeSoto, Texas due to an accident.
Allen was born October 31, 1928 in Beaumont, Texas to Eddie Albert and Irene (Oaks) Martin. He served four years in the US Air Force. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Baylor. Prior to retirement, Allen was an employee of Texas A&M Oceanography Department for 30 years.
Allen’s job required travelling, which he and Joyce thoroughly enjoyed. They traveled to numerous states as well as abroad. His other interests included bowling, movies (especially romantic comedies), attending musicals, however, his favorite pastime was driving his grandchildren around just for fun.
Joyce was born November 1, 1935 in Yoakum, Texas to Herbert Herman and Viola (Bell) Buenger. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College, now Texas State University. Joyce retired from Bryan ISD after completing a 30-year teaching career, of which, 20 years were in Bryan.
Joyce loved music. She was amazingly talented; she played the piano and guitar. She also used her musical skills in the classroom as a teaching tool for her students. Although she loved all animals, dogs were her favorite.
Allen and Joyce shared an interest in things of the past. While in Bryan they bought a home that was built in 1903 and were active members of the Historical Society.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Irene Martin of Waco, TX; and brother. Eddie Ray Martin of California.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Viola Buenger of Victoria, TX.
Allen and Joyce are survived by their son, James Martin, II and wife, Wendy of Cedar Hill, TX; and grandchildren, Victoria “Tori” Martin and James “Eric” Martin. Allen is also survived by a nephew, Jeff Martin of California.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 3, 2025 in the Oakes Cemetery in Limestone County.
