James Riley McElroy

James Riley “Jim” McElroy, of Shiloh, passed away April 29, 2024 in Mexia, Texas at the age of 77.   He was born November 3, 1946 in Mexia, Texas to Alfred Maurice and Lillian Marie (Richardson) McElroy.  He began school in the Shiloh Elementary School, transferring later to Mexia ISD where he graduated from Mexia High School, Class of 1965.  He also attended college for 2 years.  Jim was among the many to see action during the Vietnam War; he served 4 years in the US Navy.

After being discharged from the Navy, he began his working career in Houston as a Draftsman and Estimator for Brown & Root. Then he moved to Diboll where he worked for Temple Industries, Diboll School System as a Maintenance Supervisor, and opened McElroy Cabinet Company.  In 1991, he returned to Shiloh and went to work for the Mexia State School as a Maintenance Supervisor, where he retired after many years of service.

Carolyn enjoyed 32 wonderful years together.  They shared a family of three children and eight grandchildren.  Family gatherings were very special times.

Jim’s hobbies consisted of carpentry, playing golf, and he loved to cook.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Marie McElroy; and two children, Rene Havard and Kenneth Black.

Jim is survived by his wife, Carolyn McElroy; son, Charles Black; son-in-law, Jeremy Havard of Diaboll; grandchildren, Kenneth Black, Colton Havard, Kaydi Mobley, River Pugh, Chloe Pugh, Kami Jorgenson, Maisie Jorgenson, and Robert Jorgenson; and sister, Elaine Bounds of Dallas.   

Visitation with the family will be 5-7, Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2024, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home with Reverend David Snow officiating.
