Funeral services for Mr. James L. "Lefty" Person, 80, of Mexia will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 15, 2008 in the Blair-Stubbs funeral home chapel in Mexia. Reverend Rick Gray and Reverend James Hooper will officiate at the service and the interment will follow in the Mexia cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home. Mr. Person was born August 7, 1927 in Mexia to Lester R. and Rachel Johnson Person. He served his country during WWII in the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. By trade Mr. Person was a pipeliner, an occupation that he enjoyed for many years. It was in the pipeline business that he was nicknamed "Lefty", being a left handed welder. Mr. Person was a longtime member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Mexia, having actually helped to build the current sanctuary. Mr. Person was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 59 + years, Marie and by 2 sisters, Wanda and Weta. Survivors include his children, Terry Person of Mexia, Barbara Shamblin and husband James David of Mexia and Stephen Person and wife, Ruth Ann of Conroe. Grandchildren, Keri Lynn Allen and husband Brandon of Mexia, David Cory Shamblin of Streetman, Hannah Marie Person of Conroe. Great Grandchildren, Bradley Mitchell Bailey, Benjamin Lucas Bailey, Cole Allen and Taylor Ryanne Allen. Brother, Dick Person and his wife Violet of George West and Sister, Mary Evelyn Brown of Mexia. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Person, Michael Denton, Brandon Allen, Cory Shamblin, Pat Walsh and Bill Bailey. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Gene Wells, Ivan Neal Jackson and John Henry Fisher.
