Jewel Hinchliffe

Sadie Jewel Hinchliffe went to meet her Lord and join the love of her life, husband Maurice, on Thursday morning, July 18, 2019. She was 90 years and 28 days old. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 21, 2019 at the Church of Christ in Teague with Mr. Jared Matlock and Mr. Richard Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery. Eric Batts, Pep Batts, Ryan Pipkin, Preston Batts, Jakob Gresham and Josh Chandler will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Saturday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.

Jewel was born June 19, 1929 to Eva Reedy-Carter and Lonnie Curtis Carter. She was welcomed by her sister, Opal.

Jewel was a true "jewell" to anyone that ever had the privilege to know her or even come into her life briefly. She had a welcoming, open soul and was deeply loved and admired by many friends, family and all she came across.

Jewel loved to cook and feed people. She was well known for her pound cakes and cookies that she made, especially on "42 nights" for Maurice and the guys, and her pride and joy, cream pies and homemade buttermilk cornbread.

In 1960, she met the "love of her life", Maurice Hinchliffe. They married on March 31, 1962 and spent 57 happy years together loving each other and serving the Lord. She and Maurice and members of their church families, Ross Avenue Church of Christ and later, Teague Church of Christ, went on numerous missionary campaigns throughout the United States and several to Belize. Australia was the only campaign she went on without him. She also taught World Bible School.

Maurice became the father, and man of the house, to daughters, Miriam Kay and Davena Gail. It often seemed Kay was the "fault" in their stars and Gail was the "crown", but they all survived as much love grew and was shared to the end. Jewel was a much loved mother who taught her daughters to be generous, kind and thoughtful adults, the same qualities she had demonstrated every single day of her life.

Jewel was preceded in death by husband, Maurice; parents, Curtis and Eva Carter; sister, Opal Comer; son-in-law, Finis Peyton and grandson, Josef Eric Mohundro.

She is survived by two daughters, Kay Mohundro and son-in-law, David of Nacogdoches and Gail Peyton of Teague; she was "Nanny" to four grandchildren, Eric Batts of Teague, Preston "Pep" Batts and wife, Julia of Wortham, Hillary Chandler and husband, Josh of Teague and Amanda Sellers of Mexia; eight great grandchildren, Ryan Pipkin and wife, Debra of Montgomery, Tyler Batts of Texas A&M College Station, Preston Batts of Wortham, Caitlyn Payne and husband, Dillon of Temple, Alyssa Harris and husband, Zak of Teague, Eva Gail Chandler of Teague, Rhiannon Gresham and Jakob Khade Gresham of Nacogdoches; two great-great grandchildren, Kinsleigh Pipkin of Montgomery and Rustin Harris of Teague; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by a special niece, Carolyn Tidwell McElroy and husband, Jim of Shiloh and a special friend Jewel and Maurice met thru Campaign For Christ, Susan Gilbert and husband, John of Ft. Worth. Susan became a faithful member of the Church of Christ and campaigned with Maurice and Jewel on several occasions; she became their "third" daughter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimers Research or Foster's Childrens Home.
