Jim was born in Lindsay, Oklahoma on May 26, 1950 - the only son of Grover Shoemake and Billie Jimmie Pauley Shoemake. He graduated from Lindsay High School in 1968. Jim was quite an athlete. Baseball was his first love, and he was an excellent center fielder. His American Legion Baseball team was State of Oklahoma runners-up his senior year. He loved that his uncles were his coaches. Jim was recruited by the Houston Astros as a high school senior, but decided to go to college instead. He also set numerous track records in high school. His first semester at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, he meet Brenda Thomason at a Baptist Student Union event for freshmen. Jim and Brenda married on August 22, 1969 at Trinity Baptist Church in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. In 1971 Jim and Brenda welcomed their first son, Matthew, to their family. In 1975 Jim and Brenda moved from Ada, Oklahoma to Mexia when Jim was promoted to manager of Duke and Ayres. They joined First Baptist Church of Mexia, Texas on Mother's Day in 1975. In 1976 Jim and Brenda welcomed their second son, Joel, and their little family was complete. When Duke and Ayres closed around 1980, Jim knew he wanted to go to work for Flatt Stationers. Jim had the pleasure of working for Leon, Tommy, and Dick for 30 years. In November 2010 Jim went to work for Mexia State School as a Security Officer. His laid-back, steady, fatherly demeanor served him well in that position. He had a heart for those who lived at Mexia State School. In November 2011, Jim transferred to the Warehouse at Mexia State School, a job that was very familiar to him after 30 years at Flatt Stationers. Jim was known and admired for his strong work ethic. Jim taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys in Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Mexia for several years. He also served as deacon at First Baptist Church. Jim was at his best as a husband and father - completely devoted to his wife and children. As a result he raised two fine sons. Jim loved his family. At Christmas he was heard to say, "I love to watch my family be happy." That was Jim.
