Joe Teel

Joe Teel, of Mexia, passed away on March 5, 2022 in Austin, Texas at the age of 72.  Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 10, 2022 at the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Gray and Rev. Shane Norcross officiating.  Darrell Spurlock, Shane Threat, Jason Morton, Brandon O’Neil, Johnny Barker, and Greg Stubbs will serve as pallbearers.

Joe was born March 26, 1949 in Mexia, Texas to C. W. and Barbara (Douglass) Teel.  Mexia has been his home for most of his life.  He graduated from Mexia High School, Class of 1967, where he excelled in football and became known as “Joe the Toe”.  Joe will be remembered as one of the best, and most accurate, in kicking field goals and extra points while attending MHS.  He continued his football career on a scholarship from East Texas Commerce.  Joe worked as a police officer with three entities, Dallas County, Mexia Police Department and Limestone County for a combined 30 plus years, in addition to working for Flatts Stationers, prior to retirement.

Joe loved the Lord, his family, church family, and his many friends.  He was a loving father of five children, grandfather, and great grandfather of numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was raised in a Christian home and was a longtime active member of the Calvary Baptist Church.  Joe truly enjoyed singing, especially, gospel songs.  In 1999, Joe’s family formed a gospel quartet; he was a founding member, spokesperson, and lead singer of the “Teel Family Singers”.  They sang in numerous churches throughout Central and East Texas until the group dissolved in 2009.

Joe had a very outgoing personality, met everyone with a big smile, and never met a stranger.  He enjoyed refereeing football games, umpiring baseball games, playing golf, gardening, and riding around checking cows.

He was preceded in death by his parents, C. W. and Barbara Teel.

Joe is survived by his five children, Robert Joseph Teel and wife, Delia, Kyle Lowe Teel, Jennie Johnson and husband, Michael, Debbie Isham and husband, Davy and Wayne Nichols and wife, Donna; 22 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; brothers, Lain Teel and wife, Joanie, Randy Teel and wife, Joan, David Teel and wife, Frankie, and Mike Teel and wife, Lacy; sisters, Marsha Smith, Toni Douglass, and Mary Castillo and husband, Felipe; very special friend and devoted caregiver, Beverly Stepp; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to all the staff at Skilled Care of Mexia for their loving devotion to Joe over the past 4 ½ years.

Memorials may be made to the Youth Camp Fund or Grief Share Ministry at Calvary Baptist Church, 519 S. McKinney St., Mexia, TX 76667
