Lois Avis (Watts) Maedgen died May 1, 2009, in Mexia, Texas at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her husband for 32 years, Robert Delane Maedgen, and her parents, Hulda and Leslie Watts. She is survived by her son, R. D. Maedgen, Jr., and his wife, Heather, her granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Maedgen, her grandson, Robert D. Maedgen, III, and his wife Virginia, and her great-grandson, Theodore Cartwright Maedgen. Lois was born September 25, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois and moved with her parents to a farm near Carrizo Springs, Texas at the age of nine. After graduation from high school at the age of 16 as valedictorian, she attended Mary Hardin Baylor College for two years by working and gaining scholarships. Due to monetary considerations, she left school to work for Dr. Scott, Jr. at Scott & White clinic before going to work for the federal government in Waco, Texas. In Waco, she worked for the Soil Conservation Service, the Veterans Hospital, and in civil service at James Connally Air Force Base. By her hard work and intelligence, she fashioned a career which culminated in her being the second woman promoted to the top civilian position at an air force base. She held responsible positions at Ft. Sam Houston, Randolph AFB, MacDill AFB, Cannon AFB, Air Force Labor Relations in Hampton, Va., and Air Force headquarters in Washington, DC. After retirement, she lived at her home on Lake Mexia for 27 years and frequently helped her friends and relatives. During her life, Lois was a member of many organizations, but especially St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Waco and subsequently Christ Episcopal Church in Mexia where she still has many friends. The family is especially grateful to Rodger and Betty Cotton for helping Lois for many years. We also want to thank the personnel of the Manor in Mexia and to those of Providence Hospice of Waco who have given her excellent patient care for the last three years. Lois loved her family, her friends, and her Lord. She greatly enjoyed the serenity of her place on Lake Mexia with a view of the sunset each evening across the lake. She was passionate in her causes but always retained a sense of humor. Her family loved her very much and will miss her. Lois will be interred at a graveside service at Mexia Cemetery at 1 PM, Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 beside her husband and her parents. Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home in Mexia is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Waco, Christ Episcopal Church, Mexia, The American Anglican Communion, or the charity of your choice.
