LaVerne Wilson, 84, of Mexia passed away January 28, 2009 in Arlington. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel. Rev. Pat Cummings will officiate. Mary LaVerne Wilson was born July 28, 1924 to Hubert H. and Jessie Cook Bailey in Frost, Texas. She was a Methodist. She graduate from Frost High School. She was a cheerleader for the Frost Polar Bears and was a member of the tennis team. After graduation, she attended Hill Junior College in Hillsboro, Tx. Later she became a licensed cosmetologist. LaVerne married Clyde Wilson in May of 1943 and they moved to Pampa, Tx. where she began her career as a cosmetologist. She opened her first business, a successful salon, in Frost, Tx. in 1945. In 1956, Clyde and LaVerne moved to Mexia, Tx. and LaVerne worked for Mildred Pollard until 1959. She then opened her own shop on Main Street and operated there until 1964 when she and Clyde moved to Irving with his job. In 1967, Clyde and LaVerne moved back to Mexia where she started the Majestic Beauty Salon, located in part of the Majestic Hotel, which later moved to the Harrison building on Palestine Street and then to a location on Milam Street. She sold her business in 1978. Ever the entrepreneurs, Clyde and Laverne bought Bonham Street Grocery in 1980 and also acquired the washateria next door. LaVerne retired in 2001. LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Wilson in 1997 and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Burrough and husband, David of Arlington and son, Bob Wilson and wife, Diane of Mexia; granddaughter, Angie Heflin and husband Jody; grandsons, Brian Jason Hines and Brian Colby Wilson; great-grandchildren, Sean Heflin, Rylee Heflin and Jaycee Heflin.
