Mattie Lou Stubbs, 75, of Wortham, passed away September 28, 2013 in Mexia. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 30, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Wortham with Rev. Stephen Schulte officiating. Interment will follow in the Wortham Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home in Mexia. Mattie was born March 2, 1938 in Palestine, Texas to Floyd C. and Jewel Coleman Deck. She married John J. Stubbs on July 6, 1956 in Wortham, Texas. During her years at Wortham High School, she excelled in basketball having been named all district guard. Mattie retired from the Wortham ISD after completing 39 years of service as secretary to the superintendent; a school in which she was very dedicated. Mattie was an accomplished seamstress. She made her own wedding dress and her granddaughter's prom and bridesmaids' dresses. She was also an artist, although she had no formal training. Mattie cherished her family; her greatest joy was spending time with her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Wortham. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mattie is survived by her husband, John Stubbs of Wortham; daughter, Bettina Jarrell and husband, Randy of Wortham; grandchildren, Sarabeth Matthews of Wortham, Juliann Allen and husband, Drew of Nashville and John "J.J." Jarrell of Wortham; four great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Ann "Libba" Vinson and husband, Gene of Lufkin and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Stephen Sims, Don Sims, Michael Dunn, John "JJ" Jarrell, Pete Vinson and Leslie Brooks. Cade Matthews will serve as honorary pallbearer. Mattie's family would like to extend a special thank you to Mexia LTC and Providence Hospice for their excellent care. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Wortham or Providence Hospice, 107 E. Commerce, Mexia, Texas 76667.
