Michael Stanley "Stan" Mitchell, 68, passed away September 4, 2011 in Tehuacana, TX. He was born on Jan 22, 1943, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and had lived in the Wortham and Tehuacana areas since 1985. Stan is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lynda; daughters Gayle Mitchell Swearer of Houston and Christa Mitchell Stephens of San Antonio, and their husbands, Brad Swearer and Scott Stephens; and three grandchildrenâ�"Reese, Morgan and Ryan; as well his mother-in-law, Annie Holmes of Crawford and brother-in-law Tony Holmes of Mosheim. He also has an adopted brother, Juan Solis and a host of cousins. His parents, Herman Stanley Mitchell and Maegene Mitchell, preceded him in death. Stan was a 1961 graduate of Tomball High School and a 1965 graduate of Sam Houston State Teachers College, where he participated in R.O.T.C. Upon graduation, he entered the Army and served for eight years in Ft. Eustis, VA, Korea, Thailand, Mobile, AL and Ft. Hood. He was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1973. He then began his long career in education working as a teacher, a coach and a principal. He obtained his Masters Degree, as well as certification as a principal and certification in special education. The last 15 years of his career were spent working with special needs students as a Vocational Adjustment Coordinator with the Bi-County Co-op in Fairfield ISD. He was active in the Texas Association of Vocational Adjustment Coordinators and served as state president as well as in other chapter offices. He retired in 2003. Stan loved all sports, especially the professional teams and schools in Texas. He enjoyed bowling, racquetball, golf and fishing. He was an active member of the Tehuacana Methodist Church. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, September 10, at 11 a.m. at the Tehuacana Methodist Church with Rev. Brad Brittain officiating.
