Nelda Blackmon

Nelda Lou Blackmon, 76, of Mexia, passed away August 1, 2013 in Mexia. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Pastor Earl Sterling officiating. Interment will follow in the Tehuacana Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 7-9 p.m., Friday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Nelda was born October 12, 1936 in Bremond, Texas to George Minyard and Ethel Wiley Sterling. She had been a resident of Mexia for 60 years. Nelda married the love of her life, Fred Joseph Blackmon on April 24, 1953 in Mexia, Texas. Her love and devotion to God and her family was evident in the way she lived her life. She supported her children and grandchildren in all of the activities in which they chose to participate. Many will remember Nelda for her smile and great sense of humor. Nelda loved anything that pertained to sewing; quilting, embroidering, crocheting and knitting. She enjoyed riding country roads, chasing rabbits and garage sales. Nelda also loved to play softball, and did until she was over 50; this included playing on teams with her grown daughters for several years. Her passion for life was enjoying it to the fullest with her family and friends. She was a member of Wortham Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Alton, Maurice, Virgil and John Earl Sterling; sister, Naomi Beldin; and son-in-laws, Glen Rogers and Jerry Duke. Nelda is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Fred Blackmon; sons, Ricky Blackmon and wife, Dixie and Joey Blackmon; daughters, Georgenia "Gena" Duke, Debra Rogers and husband, Richard, Scarlet Floyd and husband, Jace and Charlotte Cook and husband; Ty; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and brother, Sammy Sterling. Pallbearers will be Ricky Blackmon, Jr., Bobby Carroll, Nathan Rogers, David Rogers, William Rogers, Clayton Loper and Donnie Morrow. Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Shaw, James Leger, Cliff Benford, Dale Rogers, Jimmy Rogers and Harley Cook.
