Ray Gene Henderson, 83, of Mexia, passed away March 10, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be 2 PM, Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Wilmer Davis and Brother Jan Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in the Mexia Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 PM at the funeral home. Ray Gene was born April 11, 1930 in Farrar to Carlie and Nora Bessie Vest Henderson. Having spent the majority of his life in Mexia, Ray Gene was a well-known and respected man around town. His working career started at the Mexia Cotton Mill and a neighborhood grocery. Later he owned and operated a number of businesses around Mexia including used car sales, roofing, house leveling and contract work, and a service station. Raising cows and farming provided him with a great deal of enjoyment. Ray Gene was a devoted Christian whose love for the Lord was evident in the way he lived his life. He loved his family and spending time with them was one of his greatest pleasures. His love and willingness to help others was shown by volunteering at the Life House and always being on the lookout for those in need. On the civic and fraternal level, Ray Gene could be found meeting with the Lions Club, the Springfield Masonic Lodge and the Men's Prayer Breakfast. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Steven Lynn Henderson; son-in-law, Tommy Pickett; sisters, Esther Mae Ainsworth, Euna Fay Allen and Clara Bates; and one brother, (Sonny) Nolan Henderson. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nellie Ruth Henderson of Mexia; daughter, Kathy Jean Pickett; son, Huey Ray Henderson and wife, Leah; grandchildren, Kasey Allen and husband, Damon, Charlie Pickett and wife, Leslie, Mika Jackson and husband, Kent, Kyle Henderson and wife, Katie, Keith Henderson and Morgan Welch and Hannah Henderson; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Allen, Cameron Allen, Madison Allen, Laynee and Jace Pickett, Carter and Ella Wheat, Tripp Jackson, Gavin and Kylie Henderson, Noah Welch and Avery Henderson. He is also survived by his siblings, Edsel Henderson, Novie Allen, Troy Henderson and Roma Dell Gilliam. Pallbearers will be Charlie Pickett, Kyle Henderson, Damon Allen, Spike Morton, Kent Jackson, Mike Morton and Ricky Sanders.
