Samuel Delma "Sam" Jackson, Jr., 81, passed away May 29, 2014 in Mexia. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Marcus Sheffield officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Grove Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Sam was born August 9, 1932 in Kickapoo, Texas to Samuel Delma and Mary Elizabeth Hall Jackson. He graduated from Mexia High School in 1951. He proudly served two years in U.S. Army during the Korean War. On October 19, 1956 in Corsicana, Texas, Sam married the love of his life, Jeraldine "Red" Farmer. Sam was employed by E. G. Hall Oil Company and then the Mexia State School, where he retired after 32 years of service in the Recreation Department. Sam was a member of the 1949 Blackcat State Football team. His love for football never wavered; he was known as the #1 fan and supporter of the Mexia Blackcats. Sam could not wait for football season each year. When two-a-day practices began, you could bet, he would be there and was until his health began to fail. Before each home game, he would paint the big "M" in the middle of the field. Sam was a member of the Blackcat Booster Club where he held several offices, including President. Sam supported not only the Blackcats, he supported the school, the town and his church. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church where he served as Usher or in his case, "Greeter". He loved people, never met a stranger and greeted everyone with a smile and friendly conversation. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infants, son, Monte Dale and daughter, Robbie Dianne Jackson; brother and sister-in-law, James and Shirley Jackson; brother, Jimmy Don Jackson; and sister, Martha Ann Jackson. Sam is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jerri "Red" Jackson of Mexia; sister and brother-in-law, Billie Sue and Howard Hall of Mexia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Bula Kerzee of Mexia; sister-in-law, Clara Williams of Corsicana; very special friends, Sonny and Judy Bowden of Mexia; and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Sonny Bowden, Brett Bowden, Keith Price, Dale Lowry, Billy Don Hall, Benjie Bowden and Vance Rose. Scott Moore will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
