Virgie Morgan

Virgie Marie Morgan, 94, of Mexia, passed away November 23, 2013 in Mexia. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Rev. James Hooper officiating. Interment will be in the Whitney Cemetery in Whitney, Texas. Visitation with the family will be 10:00-11:00 a.m., Wednesday at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Marie was born in Farrar, Texas on April 16, 1919 to Johnie Monroe and Callie Slaughter Kennedy; the first of four children. The family moved to Mexia in 1922, where her parents were in business. As a child, Marie worked in her parents' grocery store while also helping to raise her sister, Wanda Lee. She graduated from Mexia High School in 1936; she then attended and graduated from Draughs Business College in Dallas. While in Dallas, she met her future husband, William "Bill" Morgan. On March 16, 1941, they married at her parents' home. While Bill was in service, during World War II, she worked for the Quarter Master Depot in Ft. Worth. They moved to Freestone County in 1950 and Marie went to work at the First National Bank of Mexia. Having no children, she helped raise her nephew, Bobby, and always considered him as a son. Marie and Bill loved horses and were instrumental in starting the Mexia Riding Club. They led many trail rides with their chuck wagon and friends and attended numerous rodeos. Marie changed professions and went to work for the telephone company in Fairfield and was later transferred to Whitney. She and Bill continued enjoying their horses while joining the Whitney Riding Club. After Bill's death in 1976, the phone company transferred her to Whitewright, Texas and she became an avid Dallas Cowboy fan. After retiring from the phone company, she moved back to Mexia in 1984. She was very active in DAVA, VFW and Pink Ladies. Marie was especially active in the Calvary Baptist Church where she taught the children's Sunday School Class for many years. Her love for God, family and people, especially children, was exemplified in the way she lived her life. Marie also worked at Wal-Mart for 16 years and retired in 2002. She was honored on her 90th Birthday by the Calvary Baptist Church in 2009. She traveled many places, including a trip to the Holy Land. Marie moved to the Bowie House for several years and later passed away at Mexia LTC. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and several nieces and nephews. Marie is survived by her sister, Wanda McDonald and husband, Cecil of Groesbeck; sister-in-law, Audrey Kennedy of Mexia; a number of nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Bobby McDonald, Brad Funk, Jerry Lee Kennedy, David Lloyd Kennedy, Robert Knutson, Alfonzo "Jr." Lozano and Jeffrey McDonald.
