Walker P. Nance, 94, of Thornton, passed away December 14, 2013 at his home. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2013 in the Thornton Cemetery with Chaplain Merry Wilburn officiating. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at Blair-Stubbs Chapel in Thornton. Louie and Bertha Walker Nance gave birth to Walker P. Nance on August 22, 1919 in Thornton, Texas. He was the first of four children; Mary Helen, Billy Jay and Wayne followed. Walker graduated from Thornton High School in 1937 as Salutatorian. Soon after high school, he followed his dreams and traveled to Houston where he took on many different professions, one of which was scooping ice cream for Borden Dairy. Later after moving to Baytown, he met Alvie and they were married in 1941. They were blessed with two sons, Billy Wayne and Michael Timothy. In 1942, he started working for Humble Oil and Refinery in Baytown until World War II began. In 1944, he was drafted into the Army and served in multiple places including Germany, France and Czechoslovakia. After his service to our country was completed, he was discharged in 1946. After the war, he returned to Baytown to continue his employment with Humble Oil and Refinery and in 1954 he met a co-worker named Pat. In the same year, he moved to Austin to pursue a new career path. In 1956, he realized that he had forgotten someone in Baytown and later that year, Walker and Pat were married in January. Also, in 1956, Walker started his career with the State of Texas. After working for the State for approximately 18 years, he retired in 1981. Walker and Pat eventually returned home to Thornton, Texas to live on the family land. He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Michael T. Nance. Walker is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pat Nance of Thornton; son, Billy Wayne Nance and wife, Bonnie of Greeneville, TN; daughter-in-law, Linda Nance of Thornton; grandchildren, Charles Nance of Groesbeck, Darlene Nance Stroud of TN, Deborah Nance Walton of Lubbock, Kristy Nance Crosby of KY and Allen Nance of TN; great-grandchildren, Aislinn Walton of Lubbock, Katie Stroud of TN, Hayden Crosby of KY, Ben Stroud of TN, Jacob Nance of TN, Willow Walton of Lubbock, Heath Crosby of KY, Tyler Nance of TN and Michael Walker Walton of Lubbock; sister, Mary Helen Nance Campbell of Tyler; and brothers, Billy Jay Nance of Shreveport, LA and Wayne Nance of Tyler.
