Our History

Blair- Stubbs has roots in this community dating back to 1910 when J.I. Riddle opened a furniture and funeral business in Mexia.

1935 was a significant year for the funeral home. J.L. Blair became associated with the firm that year and also Riddle Burial Association was established as one of, if not the first burial association in Texas.

John S. Stubbs Sr became associated with the firm in 1945. The operation continued in the downtown location until 1957 when J.K. Hughes's home was purchased and converted to a funeral home.

The Hughes home built in 1918 by the Munger family was purchased by the Hughes family in the early '20s during the Mexia oil boom. J.K. Hughes added a South wing and front porch to the home as well as central heat and air (one of the first in this area) other additions to the home including the chapel and elevator.

In 1968 J.L. Blair and J.S. Stubbs purchased the funeral home from the Riddle family and have been known as Blair- Stubbs ever since. Jimmy Blair's interest was purchased by John Stubbs in 1978. John Stubbs Jr. became active in the business in 1980 after graduation from Mortuary School. John Stubbs Jr. purchased the Funeral Home in 1995 and his wife Kathleen also a licensed funeral director continue to serve families with the same genuine spirit as did their predecessors

Many changes have taken place over the years with the advent of the computer, fax machines, and almost instant communication, but true personal service remains the hallmark at Blair-Stubbs.
